E4OD tranny pans / Coolers

Post by shockseals.com »

Anybody have anything good or bad to say about that extra capacity pans out there? Some seem too big dimensionally for offroad(mag hytec +16qt).

Any coolers that integrate pretty seemlessly without barb fittings and hose clamps?

I use the shallow 2wd Moroso sheetmetal aluminum pan. It adds two quarts over the factory 4wd pan, but is over an inch shorter. The thin sheetmetal is good for cooling, but does have to be well protected.

Aftermarket pans: Why? They serve nofunctional improvement. If they stick lower they are really bad. If they do not have the off road sump then also bad. Extra volume is no solution for heat Coolers are the solution. They look nice until that big rock kills them.

Coolers: All aftermarket coolers use hose and hose clamps. I never use barbs. I make my own bead ends on the steel lines coming from the tranny. Homework required to plumb properly.
I have 1 trailer pkg cooler that came with the Bronco and one big B&M blower cooler put them in series and bypassed the radiator.
You can use AN fittings with beaded AL tubing Lots of fitting choices.
Tip Always use rubber shock isolators to mount coolers. More homework required. I use VW mounts.

For my '96 E4OD, I put on a PML cast aluminum pan from PATC in Bossier City, LA.

It's from 'www.yourcovers.com', and is a deep aluminum ribbed pan for the E4OD. I purchased it online form http://www.partshp.com/Pans.htm for $220.00. It adds another 3.5 quarts of ATF. I wanted this on the transmission before it was all buttoned up and I drove it home. It required the radius arm rear mount x-member to be removed and re-fabricated...as the new deep pan made contact with the Autofab x-tube. Oh well...I tried to find the pan that had the most amount of room there at the back slope, but I missed it by that much!

Just my $0.02.

Good luck!

No intent to disparage Brad.
The physics of more fluid and a bigger pan is apparently mis understood. What extra fluid does is simply provide a time delay before the fluid reaches that high temp limit. The extra fins and extra surface area does provide a bit of cooling, however rememberr the heat from the engine is what it sees, not the much cooler ambient air. Makes me wonder if the feature is actually bad? Then most of us add a skid under the engine /tranny pans so the tranny and engine pan get much reduced air flow.
My conclusion for cooling is to use big cooler in front of the radiator. For glitz use lots of shiny parts under the truck. Besides as I said before Ford has a well thought out tranny pan for the Bronco.

What size and type of thread/fitting are the hardlines into the radiator?

5/16" I use steel brake lines from NAPA. Easy to bend by hand. Then make my own bead ends. You can splice stock metal to steel or AL with compression fittings. Use the fittings at the tranny or rad that Ford supplied. At the cooler I use AL beaded stubs to hose. If you use JY coolers get the Ford fittings. If you use aftermarket coolers they are standard pipe threads but will still need some tubestubs to connect to hose. Do NOT use barb fittings.
Beaded ends on metal tube are preferred way to attach hose to metal. Use EFI hose or hydraulic hose from the auto store. Cannot find a beader then a work around is required. Like find a threading die that will lightly scratch the end of the tubes. Then use two EFI hose clamps.
Ahh yes, tips from the Aerospace DIY guy.

Thanks for the tips...I found 5/8-18 inverted flare to be the size at the radiator but it has some recessed BS so im not sure if I am going to find any adapters other than some I found online that go to a barbed fitting.

Exactly, which is why I just used the stock tube beaded it and put a hose on it.
