Steering upgrade parts list

Post by cbans »

I am finally getting around to installing my beams and lift. I am buying all my parts for the frontend rebuild and what to upgrade the steering while I am at it. After searching around I wanted to know if you guys agree with these part numbers or if I should be looking at something else. Thanks for the help.

Moog part numbers:

89-97 Ambulance & Crew cab
RH Outer ES2396R
RH Adjusting sleeve ES2012S
Connecting Tie Rod DS1073
LH Inner End DS1017T
LH Adjusting sleeve ES2080S
LH Outer ES2078LT

86-96 U150 & F150 4WD
RH Outer ES2077RT
RH Adjusting sleeve ES2079S
Connecting Tie Rod DS1038T
LH Inner End DS1017T
LH Adjusting sleeve ES2080S
LH Outer ES2078LT

I found this where they said this short side is stronger than stock.

DS1072 short side inner tie rod
ES2079s adjusting sleeve
ES3362L short side outer tie rod end

Have you read the big steering thread? I wouldn't order anything before reading the whole thing.

I ran all of the Raybestos stuff sleeved over on my recent baja trip, all held up fine and seems good to go.

I searched the part numbers everything via Google/eBay to get the absolute best price. It was 65% cheaper than walking into Oreilly and buying that way. Same goes for balljoints- the Raybestos Blues are the same as the Napa and those from Amazon were much much better price wise. About $60 per knuckle if I remember right.

It's hard to say what the quality of the current Raybestos ball joints is. I've not been impressed by their steering components. Hopefully their ball joints haven't dropped in quality since Spicer sold them off.

I guess I am just thinking that Napa doesn't manufacture anything and if the RB are gold with blue and the napa are gold with blue --I'm just guessing with fairly decent certainty that they are the same in different boxes but anything is possible.

I put together a project build slide deck back in 2008 when I started my '96 prerunner work, and have been updating since.

Back in August 2012, I added a slide to depict all of the H/D F-250 4x4/Ambulance parts from Moog. It's attached inline below. I think the part numbers are pretty up to date...

Would love to update this if folks have better/newer numbers...

Have any of you guys done this steering tie rod end flip and upgrade?

What do you think about it compared to the Ambulance upgrade?

Unless you're ordering OE Ford parts, personally, would just replace with stock or have a spare set on hand. Spicer used to be my go-to brand as it used to be a high-grade product, but that's changed over the years and especially in the, somewhat, recent past when Raybestos bought the chassis parts division. Moog hasn't ever done anything to impress me.... To be honest, these days I just buy whatever as the quality is roughly the same. Unless something has changed since I got out of auto repair, if you're not buying OE, all the "premium" brands are about the same. Certainly not as good as OE but as good as it's gonna get otherwise.

I should also note that good (decent) geometry and being reasonable about limiting wheel travel to mitigate steering issues is key.
