Re: Optimum Rear Axle Width
Have you every had the narrower rear end with the 4.5 over beams? If so, How did affect or change the handling? Yes I ran the stock width rear end with a wider (+4.5) front until I built a wider rear end!.. I think most guys got through this progression... Having said that, it is just my opinion bu...

Re: Optimum Rear Axle Width
I run a 71.25 wms/wms rear axle on my 4.5 over TTB truck... its about dead on trackwidth matching front/back... Optimal in my opinion is exactly what your front end width is (or just slightly under is better than just slightly over)...

Re: I think I dun goofed...
run what you got... That is roughly the equivalent of running a tire that is 1/8 of an inch different in diameter in tread wear (based on a 35 inch tire).... and after a couple thousand miles on a brand new set of rubber, I would venture to say your front and rear tires have that much delta...

Re: Handheld Radios.... what is everyone using!
For me the high gain longer than stock antennas on the handhelds is a must have. All my handhelds have them except a pair of old 2 channel Motorola VHF handhelds I have in my junk box. = Agree. When I got the high gain ant I tested by listening to NOAA weather and tuned to a far away weak site. The...

Re: Handheld Radios.... what is everyone using!
I am thinking about the Boafeng UV-5R+ Price $38 So what is your long term experience??? What do you have? I have 3 Boafeng UV-5R that I use regularly and they still work great after a couple years of Arizona/Baja heat and dust... Just ordered the new BaoFeng BF-F8HP, which is an 8 watt vhf version...

Re: First radio install.
To be safe, I would not coil the extra cable if you don't have to. It can attenuate the signal and impact your signal quality. Best to cut off extra coil and re-solder a new PL 259, re-install and retune the antenna. But if you don't have the access to what's needed, with shielded coax, you can move...

Re: Handheld Radios.... what is everyone using!
I am going to say technically the yaesu HTs would not be part 95 compliant.. Generally, radios made for GMRS, FRS and MURS as well as CB cannot be designed to operate outside of the prescribed frequencies of the radio service, or operate at higher power than is allowed, and in the case of FRS, canno...

Re: Handheld Radios.... what is everyone using!
On UHF you can use the Family Radio band frequencies or you need to get a Ham license to be legal in the US. In Mexico where we use the range extender and vehicle repeater there is no license needed. I never thought about FRS on the uhf side, I guess that would bring back into service any old radio...

Re: Handheld Radios.... what is everyone using!
One of my new handheld radio applications I have taken from the police department is the vehicle UHF repeater setup with a VHF Kenwood 110 watt radios. The handheld is on UHF with a headset, then it operates on the VHF band through the 110 watt radio as a range extender for the handheld. How do you...

Now if I can find some helmet kits for less than 4 times the cost of this radio I would be set for motorcycle coms. For fully operational race type helmet set ups, I agree, you are going to have to spend some money to get optimal set up. The PTT button is the weakness of all the non-bike specific p...

Re: Handheld Radios.... what is everyone using!
If you are using the baofeng UV5R, I would suggest upgrading the antenna to something like a Diamond RH77CA or Nagoya NA771. I even went so far as to buy a 2m SmileyAntenna tuned on my crew's frequency. From my own audio tests there is definitely improvement over the stock rubber ducky. These cheap ...

Re: What mobile coms?
Or you and your buddies could just study for a week after work, pay 15 dollars and take the HAM test to get your call sign. That will allow you to: 1) talk on both the VHF and UHF Ham bands 2) Use the HAM repeaters that link up all the way from San Diego to Phoenix (and much more) 3) Legally monitor...

Re: F-O-A's ??
I have ran a set of 14 inch coilover for a couple years/couple thousand miles of baja. I have not had a problem with them. I also run Fox and Swayaway in various other applications. FOA have been a good shock at a very good price, but price is a main factor and I would spend more if I had more... My...

Re: 8.8 opinions
You go to war with the axle that you have, not the axle that you wish you had! Either way 8.8 or 9, if you are wide up front, I have found that widening the rear and correcting the tracking geometry is one of the most noticeable handling improvements I have made... What is the preferred width for t...

Re: 8.8 opinions
Just an update on the 8.8/9 Hybrid that I have posted about on a couple of these threads.... Its in its 3rd year now and has about 4 thousand baja miles on it and about 2 thousand highway miles. It has had it first failure, a leaking pinion seal. I have replaced it and will be out on it for the baja...
